Submental Liposuction
Refining fullness beneath the chin to restore a more defined jawline
Fullness beneath the chin can change how you see your profile, even when the rest of your face feels in balance. You may notice it in photos, from the side, or when your head is slightly tilted downward. This area is often influenced by genetics, aging, or weight changes, and it does not always respond the way you expect, even with consistent habits.
Over time, the transition between the chin and neck can begin to look softer or less defined. When that change starts to feel noticeable, it is natural to look for a way to restore a cleaner, more defined contour.
Submental liposuction focuses on removing excess fat beneath the chin to bring back that definition. At PIPS, Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan, the approach is measured and precise, with attention to maintaining a natural appearance that fits comfortably with the rest of your features.
Who May Consider Submental Liposuction
This procedure may be appropriate if fullness beneath the chin is affecting the way your jawline appears. You may feel that the area looks heavier than expected or that the angle between the chin and neck has become less distinct.
Skin quality plays an important role. When the skin retains enough elasticity, it can adjust more naturally after fat is removed. If there is also looseness in the skin or underlying muscle, combining liposuction with a neck lift or facelift may be discussed to achieve a more complete result.
A careful evaluation helps determine whether this procedure alone will provide the improvement you are looking for.
Evaluation and Planning
Surgical Approach
Submental liposuction is performed using small, precise instruments designed to refine the area without creating irregularities.
After anesthesia is administered, most often local with light sedation, or general anesthesia if combined with another procedure, a solution is introduced to prepare the tissue and reduce bleeding.
Small, carefully placed incisions are made beneath the chin and, when needed, just behind the ears. Through these openings, a fine cannula is used to gently remove fat in a controlled and even manner. The focus remains on smooth contour, symmetry, and preserving a natural transition between the chin, jawline, and neck.
The procedure typically takes between 30 and 60 minutes, depending on the extent of treatment.
Recovery and results
Recovery is generally straightforward. You may notice some swelling and a feeling of tightness during the first one to two weeks. A compression garment is usually recommended early on to support the new contour as the area heals.
Most people return to light daily activities within a few days. As swelling gradually settles, the jawline becomes more defined and the contour between the chin and neck appears more refined.
The change is often subtle in the best way. It becomes noticeable in profile and in how your face feels overall, without looking overdone.
Safety and Follow-Up
Every procedure is discussed carefully so you understand what to expect. Attention to technique helps reduce the risk of irregularities, asymmetry, or removing too much volume.
Follow up visits allow healing to be monitored closely and give you the opportunity to ask questions as the result continues to settle.
Insurance Information
Submental liposuction is generally considered an elective cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance.
If you are considering surgery, the cost of the procedure and related care will be your responsibility. During your consultation, pricing and payment options will be reviewed with you in detail so you have a clear understanding of what to expect before deciding how you would like to move forward.
