Breast Lift
(Mastopexy)
Lift and reshape the breasts to restore a more supported, balanced contour
Over time, the breasts can lose firmness and sit lower on the chest. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuations, and natural aging all affect skin elasticity and tissue support. You may notice that bras fit differently, that clothing no longer sits the same way, or that the upper part of the breast appears flatter than before. A breast lift addresses these changes by repositioning and reshaping the existing tissue rather than adding volume.
A breast lift, also called mastopexy, is designed to raise the breasts to a higher position on the chest and improve overall shape. The procedure focuses on restoring support and proportion while maintaining a look that feels natural to your body.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), each breast lift is planned individually, with attention to anatomy, skin quality, and long-term tissue support. The emphasis is on creating a balanced result that fits comfortably with your frame.
Who may consider a breast lift
You may consider a breast lift if the breasts have begun to sit lower on the chest, if the nipples point downward, or if the overall shape feels less supported than before. Changes in skin elasticity can make the upper portion of the breast appear flatter, even when weight has remained stable. In many cases, size is not the primary concern. The intention is to restore a higher, firmer position without increasing volume.
If additional fullness would improve overall balance, a lift can be combined with implants or fat grafting. This is discussed during consultation to determine whether adding volume would meaningfully support the final result.
Surgical approachand planning
Planning begins with a detailed evaluation of breast position, skin elasticity, symmetry, chest width, and nipple placement. This assessment helps determine how much lifting is needed and which technique will provide the most appropriate support.
Depending on your anatomy, the incision may be placed around the areola and/or vertically down the lower breast, or include a horizontal component in the breast crease. The choice is based on the degree of sagging and the amount of reshaping required.
During surgery, excess skin is removed and the underlying breast tissue is reshaped and elevated. The nipple–areola complex is repositioned to a more centered, natural location while remaining attached to its blood supply. Internal support techniques are used to help maintain the new position and reduce tension on the skin closure.
When volume enhancement is desired, a breast lift can be combined with implants for added projection or with fat grafting for a more subtle increase in fullness.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our private, on-site surgical facility and typically takes between one and a half and three hours, depending on the technique used.
Recovery and results
Most patients return to light daily activities within about a week. Swelling and temporary tightness are common early in recovery and gradually improve over several weeks. A supportive garment is worn to help protect the surgical reshaping as tissues settle.
The breasts appear higher and more supported immediately after surgery, with continued refinement as swelling decreases. Incisions fade gradually over time and are positioned to follow natural breast contours. Final results reflect a firmer, more lifted appearance that feels proportionate to your body.
Safety and follow up
All surgical procedures carry risk, and these are reviewed in detail during consultation. Careful planning and precise technique help reduce concerns such as asymmetry, delayed healing, or changes in nipple sensation. You will receive clear instructions regarding incision care, activity progression, and follow-up visits so healing can be monitored closely.
Insurance information
At this time, insurance is not accepted for cosmetic breast lift procedures. During your consultation, costs and payment options will be reviewed clearly so you know what to expect before making any decisions.
Beginning January 1, 2026, Dr. Hammond will no longer accept insurance for surgical procedures. Dr. Goote will continue participating with select insurance plans only for breast cancer reconstruction, revision, and breast reductions.
Why choose PIPS
Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan
Breast lift procedures at PIPS are planned with careful evaluation of skin elasticity, breast position, and long-term tissue support. Dr. Dennis Hammond brings decades of experience in reshaping and elevating the breast, with particular attention to internal support and scar quality. He has also contributed to the development of specialized suture techniques used in periareolar procedures, designed to promote balanced tension and refined healing around the areola. His work reflects a steady focus on both structural support and aesthetic detail.
Dr. Paige Goote approaches mastopexy with detailed anatomical assessment and modern surgical methods that focus on stable reshaping and proportion. She places careful attention on incision placement, symmetry, and how the breast will look both in and out of clothing. Together, their work reflects a steady, measured approach to lifting and reshaping that prioritizes balance, support, and realistic expectations.
