Arm Lift
Restoring smoother upper-arm contours with balance and natural-looking results
Considering an arm lift often comes from noticing changes that affect comfort or confidence, particularly in clothing or everyday movement. It is common to feel self-conscious about loose upper-arm skin and to have questions about surgery, scarring, or recovery. The consultation allows time to understand what feels most important to you and how different options may fit into your life.
An arm lift, also known as brachioplasty, is a surgical procedure designed to remove excess skin and tissue from the upper arms, refine contour, and restore a more balanced shape. Aging, genetics, and significant weight loss can all lead to skin laxity that does not respond to exercise alone.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), arm lift surgery is planned thoughtfully and individually. Each approach considers natural arm contours, careful scar placement, and long-term durability, with safety guiding every decision.
Who may consider an
arm lift
An arm lift may be an option for individuals in good overall health with stable weight who feel bothered by loose or sagging skin of the upper arms. Some people notice excess tissue following major weight loss, while others experience gradual skin laxity that affects how clothing fits or feels. During consultation, goals and concerns are discussed openly so expectations remain realistic and aligned with individual anatomy.
Surgical approach and planning
Brachioplasty is tailored to skin quality, tissue characteristics, and personal goals. During evaluation, the surgeon assesses skin laxity and elasticity, fat distribution, arm shape, existing scars, and whether liposuction may help refine contour.
Based on these findings, a limited approach may be recommended for mild laxity near the armpit, a traditional approach for more significant tightening along the inner arm, or an extended approach when excess tissue extends beyond the upper arm. The specific technique depends on where laxity is present and how much reshaping is needed.
The procedure is performed under general anesthesia in a private, on-site surgical facility. Incisions are planned along the inner arm where they can be more easily concealed when the arms are at rest. Excess skin is removed, underlying tissues are tightened, and when appropriate, liposuction may be added to smooth transitions and improve definition. The skin is then re-draped and closed using techniques designed to support even healing and refined scars. In some cases, temporary drains may be placed during early recovery.
Recovery and results
Recovery timelines vary, but many patients are able to return to light daily activities within about one week. Swelling, tightness, and soreness are expected early on and typically improve gradually over several weeks. A compression arm sleeve is often used during recovery to help manage swelling and support healing, and activity restrictions are guided carefully, particularly for lifting, strenuous exercise, and repetitive arm movements.
As swelling resolves and tissues settle, results continue to refine. The goal is a smoother, firmer upper-arm contour that improves comfort in clothing and everyday activities. Because healing and scar maturation differ from person to person, patience is an important part of the process, and guidance is provided throughout recovery.
Insurance information
At this time, insurance is not accepted for arm lift or other body contouring procedures. During your consultation, costs and payment options will be reviewed clearly so you can plan with confidence and understanding.
Safety and thoughtful care
All surgical procedures involve risk, and responsible care includes clear discussion of those risks. Individual considerations and steps to reduce complications are reviewed during consultation. Patients receive straightforward instructions on incision care, activity limits, and what to expect during healing, along with guidance on when to contact the office with concerns.
