Aesthetic and reconstructive breast surgery planned with precision and care
Breast surgery is often considered after changes in shape, position, volume, or comfort. Pregnancy, breastfeeding, weight fluctuation, aging, prior procedures, or medical treatment can all influence how the breasts look and feel. In some cases, physical discomfort from heaviness or asymmetry becomes the primary concern. In others, it is about restoring support and balance after gradual change.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), breast procedures are approached with careful evaluation and individualized planning. Surgical decisions are based on anatomy, skin quality, tissue support, and overall proportion rather than a standardized approach.
Dr. Dennis Hammond has devoted much of his career to breast surgery, contributing to the development and refinement of techniques used in lifting, reduction, and augmentation. His SAFE approach to augmentation emphasizes controlled pocket creation and careful soft-tissue handling. His SPAIR method for breast reduction and lifting focuses on durable reshaping with a shorter scar pattern when appropriate. He also co-developed specialized closure methods for periareolar procedures designed to support balanced tension and refined healing around the areola.
Dr. Paige Goote brings a thoughtful, anatomy-based approach to breast surgery, with attention to symmetry, tissue integrity, and careful reshaping. Together, they combine thoughtful decision-making with refined technique built through years of direct surgical experience.
Our Breast Procedures
This section includes the full range of breast-focused surgical procedures offered at PIPS, designed to address concerns related to shape, volume, symmetry, and overall balance.
During consultation, time is taken to understand your goals and explain each option clearly, including what to expect from surgery and recovery. The focus is on clarity and realistic expectations, so you can make informed decisions.
Breast Augmentation
Breast augmentation enhances breast volume and shape using implants. The procedure is tailored to your anatomy and goals, with careful attention to proportion, symmetry, and how the result will integrate naturally with your body.
Breast Implant Exchange
Breast implant exchange replaces existing implants to update size, shape, or implant type. It may also be performed to address changes that occur over time or to refine a previous result.
Breast Implant Removal
Breast implant removal involves taking out existing implants, with or without additional reshaping procedures. In some cases, a lift or fat grafting may be recommended to restore contour after removal.
Breast Lift (Mastopexy)
A breast lift repositions and reshapes the breast by removing excess skin and elevating the tissue. This procedure restores a more youthful contour and can improve symmetry without significantly changing volume.
Breast Reconstruction
Breast reconstruction restores breast shape following mastectomy or other conditions affecting the breast. The approach is highly individualized and may involve implants, autologous tissue, or a combination of techniques.
Breast Reduction
Breast reduction removes excess breast tissue and skin to create a lighter, more proportionate breast size. In addition to aesthetic improvement, this procedure can help relieve physical discomfort such as back, neck, or shoulder strain.
Breast Revision
Breast revision addresses concerns from a previous breast procedure. This may include improving symmetry, adjusting implant position, or refining the overall shape to better align with your goals.
Gynecomastia
Gynecomastia surgery reduces excess tissue in the male chest to create a flatter, more defined contour. The procedure may involve removal of glandular tissue, fat, or both, depending on the underlying cause.
Fat Grafting (Breast)
Fat grafting to the breast uses your body’s own fat to subtly enhance volume and improve contour. This technique can be used on its own or in combination with other procedures to refine shape and achieve a softer, more natural result.
Our approach to
breast surgery
Careful evaluation
Planning begins with a detailed assessment of breast position, nipple placement, skin elasticity, chest width, and symmetry. Previous surgical history is reviewed when applicable. This allows technique selection to reflect both structure and support needs.
Technique selection guided by anatomy
Incision placement, lifting pattern, implant type and position, and internal support strategies are chosen based on your specific anatomy. In lifting and reduction procedures, refined short-scar approaches may be used when appropriate. In augmentation, controlled pocket preparation and careful tissue handling are prioritized to promote stability and soft, natural movement.
Periareolar reshaping, when performed, may incorporate specialized suture techniques designed to distribute tension evenly and support refined scar healing.
Structural reshaping and support
Whether the procedure involves lifting, reducing, augmenting, revising, or reconstructing, attention is given to preserving blood supply, maintaining sensation when possible, and creating shape through internal support rather than relying on skin tension alone. The emphasis is on stability, proportion, and results that settle naturally as healing progresses.
Recovery and Follow Up
Recovery varies depending on the procedure performed. Clear instructions are provided regarding activity progression, supportive garments, incision care, and healing milestones. Follow-up visits allow careful monitoring of tissue settling, scar maturation, and overall healing.
Where Procedures Are Performed
Most cosmetic breast surgeries are performed in the private, on-site surgical facility located on the lower level of the PIPS office building in Grand Rapids, West Michigan. Being cared for in our private, on-site facility allows for continuity, familiarity, and a more comfortable experience throughout the process.
Why choose PIPS
Patients often choose PIPS for the clarity of consultation, the consistency of surgical planning, and the attentiveness of follow-up care. Each procedure is planned with attention to anatomy and carried out with careful technique, with an emphasis on results that fit comfortably with your body.
