Labiaplasty
Reshaping the labia minora to improve comfort and restore natural balance
Changes in the size or shape of the labia minora can affect comfort in ways that are sometimes difficult to talk about. You may notice irritation with certain clothing, discomfort during exercise, or sensitivity during activities such as cycling or intimacy.
In other situations, the concern may be related to asymmetry or elongation of the labia that makes you feel self-conscious about the appearance of the area.
These concerns are more common than many women realize, and discussing them with an experienced surgeon can help you better understand the options available.
Labiaplasty is a surgical procedure that reshapes or reduces the labia minora when excess tissue causes discomfort or personal concern. The procedure can help improve daily comfort and restore a more balanced appearance while maintaining the natural anatomy of the area.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), labiaplasty is performed using precise surgical techniques that preserve sensation and maintain a natural contour.
When labiaplasty may be considered
You may begin exploring labiaplasty if the labia cause irritation with certain clothing, discomfort during physical activity, or sensitivity during intimacy. Enlarged or elongated labia can also create rubbing or irritation during activities such as cycling, running, or exercise.
In other situations, the concern may relate more to asymmetry or the overall appearance of the area. If the shape or size of the labia affects your comfort or confidence, a consultation can help you understand whether surgery may be appropriate.
During your visit, your surgeon will listen carefully to your concerns, evaluate your anatomy, and explain the options that may help address the issues you are experiencing.
Planning your procedure
Your consultation includes a careful evaluation of the anatomy and a discussion about the changes you would like to see. This helps determine the most appropriate surgical approach while maintaining natural proportions.
During this evaluation, your surgeon may assess the size and shape of the labia, the natural contour and pigmentation of the tissue, and the overall balance of the genital area. If excess tissue around the clitoral hood contributes to imbalance or discomfort, this area may also be discussed.
Each surgical plan is individualized so the procedure respects natural anatomy and preserves sensation.
Surgical techniques
Several surgical techniques may be considered depending on your anatomy and the type of change you would like to achieve.
The trim technique removes excess tissue along the outer edge of the labia to create a smoother contour. This method may be helpful when the labial edge is irregular or when excess tissue extends along the margin.
The wedge technique removes a small section of tissue from the central portion of the labia while preserving the natural border. This approach allows the natural edge of the labia to remain intact while reducing excess tissue.
If excess tissue around the clitoral hood contributes to imbalance in the area, a clitoral hood reduction may also be discussed. When this adjustment is performed, the approach is conservative and focused on preserving natural sensitivity.
The procedure typically takes about one to two hours.
Recovery and healing
After surgery, swelling is expected and usually reaches its highest point during the first few days. As healing progresses, swelling gradually improves and the tissues begin to settle into their new shape.
You may feel comfortable returning to work within several days, depending on the type of activity involved. Strenuous exercise and sexual activity should be avoided for about six weeks to allow the area to heal properly.
Incisions are carefully placed within natural folds of the tissue so that scars typically become very difficult to see over time.
As healing continues, the labia appear more balanced and daily activities often become more comfortable.
Safety and surgical care
Labiaplasty requires careful attention to anatomy, tissue handling, and symmetry. Modern surgical techniques focus on preserving sensation, minimizing visible scarring, and maintaining natural contour.
During your consultation, your surgeon will review the procedure in detail, discuss possible risks, and answer your questions so you can make a fully informed decision.
Insurance information
Labiaplasty is generally considered an elective procedure and is not covered by insurance.
If you are considering surgery, the cost of the procedure and related care will be your responsibility. During your consultation, you will have the opportunity to discuss pricing in detail and ask any questions you may have before making a decision.
Taking time to fully understand the procedure, recovery, and financial aspects of surgery is an important part of the process, and our team will help guide you through each step.
