Breast Implant Exchange
Replacing existing implants to restore comfort, balance, and a natural breast contour
Considering a breast implant exchange often comes from noticing changes over time that affect comfort, appearance, or how the breasts feel in daily life. Some patients experience tightness, shifting, or firmness related to capsular contracture, while others feel that their current implants no longer reflect their preferences or anatomy. It is also common to have questions about safety, recovery, or how revision surgery differs from an initial augmentation. These concerns are expected, and they are an important part of the consultation process.
Breast implant exchange is a surgical procedure designed to remove existing breast implants and replace them with new ones. The goal is to improve comfort, positioning, and overall balance while respecting the natural proportions of the body. The procedure may be considered due to implant aging, rupture, capsular contracture, displacement, or changes following pregnancy, weight fluctuations, or aging.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), breast implant exchange is planned with careful attention to tissue health, prior surgical history, and realistic goals. The focus is on thoughtful decision-making and results that feel appropriate, stable, and comfortable over time.
Surgical approach and planning
Revision breast surgery is often more complex than a first-time augmentation, as it involves working with tissues that have been previously operated on. Surgical planning begins with a detailed evaluation of breast tissue, implant position, capsule condition, chest anatomy, and individual goals.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our private, on-site surgical facility. Existing implants are typically removed through prior incision sites or along the inframammary fold to maintain discreet scarring whenever possible. Management of the capsule surrounding the implant is a critical part of the procedure and may involve releasing or removing portions of the capsule to create a healthy and stable space for the new implants.
New implants are selected based on anatomy, lifestyle, and desired feel and appearance, with an emphasis on safety and comfort. When appropriate, adjustments to the implant pocket or supportive tissues are made to improve positioning and balance. If skin laxity or changes in breast position are present, a breast lift may be performed at the same time.
The length of surgery varies depending on complexity and typically ranges from one and a half to three hours.
Recovery and results
Recovery experiences vary, but many patients are able to return to light daily activities within about one week. Swelling, tightness, and temporary discomfort are common early in the healing process and gradually improve over time. Activity restrictions are important during the initial recovery period to support proper healing and tissue stability.
As swelling resolves, the breasts settle into a more comfortable and natural position. The intended outcome is a breast contour that feels balanced, supported, and better aligned with the patient’s body and daily life. Ongoing refinement occurs as tissues soften and scars mature, and your surgeon will guide expectations throughout recovery.
Safety and thoughtful care
All surgical procedures involve risk, and responsible care means discussing those risks clearly and honestly. At PIPS, patient safety guides every stage of breast implant exchange, from surgical planning and technique to postoperative follow-up. Patients receive clear instructions on incision care, activity progression, and what to expect during healing, along with guidance on when to contact the office with concerns.
Insurance information
Breast implant exchange is typically considered a self-pay procedure and is not covered by insurance in most cases.
Beginning January 1, 2026, Dr. Hammond will no longer participate with any insurance plans for surgical services and will offer breast implant exchange on a self-pay basis only.
Dr. Paige Goote performs breast implant exchange as a self-pay procedure in our private, on-site surgical facility. In uncommon situations where implant removal or exchange is covered by insurance due to medical necessity, surgical care is provided by Dr. Goote and performed at an approved outpatient surgery center or hospital.
During consultation, individual circumstances are reviewed carefully so patients can understand their options and plan with clarity.
