Refining the neck and jawline for a smoother, more defined profile
Changes in the neck often develop gradually over time. You may begin to notice loose skin, fullness beneath the chin, or a loss of definition along the jawline that makes the neck appear heavier or less defined than it once was. These changes can occur as the skin loses elasticity, fat distribution shifts, and the underlying muscles of the neck begin to relax.
A Neck Lift is a surgical procedure that addresses these changes by tightening the underlying muscles, removing or redistributing fat, and refining the contour of the neck and jawline. By improving the structure beneath the skin, the profile of the neck can appear smoother and more defined while maintaining a natural appearance.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), Neck Lift surgery is planned with careful attention to facial harmony so that improvements to the neck remain balanced with the rest of the face.
When a Neck Lift may be considered
You may begin considering a Neck Lift if loose skin or excess fullness around the neck affects the definition of the jawline or the overall profile of the face. Changes in the platysma muscle can also create visible vertical bands in the neck, which may become more noticeable over time.
Excess fat beneath the chin may soften the angle between the chin and neck, while skin laxity can contribute to a heavier appearance in the lower face. When these concerns affect how the neck looks in profile or in photographs, surgical treatment may help restore a smoother and more balanced contour.

Planning your procedure
Every neck has its own structure, proportions, and patterns of aging. Planning a Neck Lift begins with a careful evaluation of the skin, fat distribution, and the tone of the platysma muscle that supports the neck.
The relationship between the neck and the jawline is also considered, since improving the contour of the neck often helps restore definition along the lower face. In some situations, combining a Neck Lift with procedures such as a Face Lift or submental liposuction may be discussed to achieve a more harmonious result.
How the procedure is performed
A Neck Lift is typically performed under general anesthesia in our private surgical facility.
Incisions are carefully placed around the ears and sometimes within the hairline so that they remain discreet once healing has occurred. A small incision beneath the chin may also be used when tightening of the platysma muscle is required.
Excess fat beneath the chin can be gently removed to improve definition in the upper neck. The platysma muscle may then be tightened to correct vertical banding and restore a smoother neck contour.
Once the deeper structures have been refined, the skin is repositioned over the improved foundation. This step allows the neck to appear smoother and more defined without creating excessive tension on the skin.
The procedure typically takes two to three hours, depending on the extent of correction required.
Benefits of a Neck Lift
Refining the contour of the neck can restore clearer definition between the chin, jawline, and upper neck. As the profile becomes smoother, the lower face often appears more balanced.
Improving these contours can help the neck appear lighter and more proportionate to the rest of the face. Subtle changes in this area often have a meaningful impact on overall facial harmony.
Recovery and healing
After surgery, swelling and mild tightness in the neck are expected during the early stages of healing. Light daily activities can usually be resumed within one to two weeks.
As swelling gradually improves, the contour of the neck and jawline becomes more visible. Healing continues over the following weeks as the tissues settle and refine.
Insurance information
Neck Lift surgery is considered an elective cosmetic procedure and is not covered by insurance.
