Breast implant removal
Removing breast implants to restore comfort, balance, and a natural breast contour
Considering breast implant removal often comes from changes that affect comfort, appearance, or how the breasts feel in everyday life. Some patients experience tightness, firmness, or distortion related to the capsule around the implant, while others simply feel that implants no longer align with their preferences or stage of life. It is also common to have questions about breast shape after removal, scarring, or whether additional procedures may be needed. These concerns are expected and are an important part of the consultation process.
Breast implant removal is a surgical procedure performed to remove existing implants and allow the breasts to settle into a shape that feels natural and comfortable for the body. The procedure may be considered for personal reasons, implant-related issues such as rupture or capsular contracture, or changes that develop over time. The focus is on restoring balance, softness, and proportion in a way that honors the patient’s natural anatomy.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), breast implant removal is planned carefully, with attention to tissue health, skin quality, and realistic expectations. Surgical decisions are individualized, recognizing that each patient’s anatomy and goals are different.
Who may consider
breast implant removal
Breast implant removal may be appropriate for individuals in good overall health who are experiencing discomfort, changes in breast shape, or concerns related to aging or ruptured implants. Some patients choose removal because they prefer a breast appearance without implants, while others require removal for medical or structural reasons. In certain cases, implant removal may be combined with a breast lift or other supportive techniques to improve breast position or contour. These options are discussed thoughtfully during consultation to ensure a clear and appropriate plan.
Surgical approach and planning
Surgical planning begins with a detailed evaluation of implant type and position, capsule condition, skin elasticity, and the distribution of natural breast tissue. This assessment helps determine whether implant removal alone is sufficient or whether additional procedures, such as a breast lift or limited fat grafting, may be recommended to support shape and proportion.
Surgery is performed under general anesthesia in our private, on-site surgical facility. Incisions are typically placed along the inframammary fold or through previous incision sites to minimize new visible scarring. Implants are removed carefully to protect surrounding tissues. Depending on the condition of the capsule, the surgeon may release it, remove part of it, or perform a complete capsulectomy when clinically appropriate.
After implant removal, the natural breast tissue is reshaped to achieve a soft and balanced contour. When skin laxity or changes in breast position are present, a breast lift may be performed at the same time to improve support and symmetry.
The procedure typically lasts between one and a half and three hours, depending on complexity.
Recovery and results
Recovery experiences vary, but many patients are able to resume light daily activities within several days. Swelling, tightness, and temporary discomfort are common early in healing and generally improve gradually. More strenuous activity is restricted initially to allow tissues to heal and stabilize properly.
As healing progresses, the breasts soften and settle into a more natural position. The intended result is a breast shape that feels comfortable, proportionate, and appropriate for the patient’s body. When combined with a breast lift, improved support and contour may also be achieved.
Your surgeon will guide expectations throughout recovery, recognizing that healing timelines differ from person to person.
Safety and thoughtful care
All surgical procedures involve risk, and responsible care means discussing those risks clearly and honestly. At PIPS, patient safety guides every step of breast implant removal, from surgical planning and technique to postoperative follow-up. Patients receive clear instructions on incision care, activity progression, and signs that should prompt a call to the office.
Insurance information
Breast implant removal is typically considered a self-pay procedure and is not covered by insurance in most cases.
Beginning January 1, 2026, Dr. Hammond will no longer participate with any insurance plans for surgical services and will offer breast implant removal on a self-pay basis only.
Dr. Paige Goote performs breast implant removal as a self-pay procedure in our private, on-site surgical facility. In uncommon situations where implant removal is covered by insurance due to medical necessity, surgical care is provided by Dr. Goote and performed at an approved outpatient surgery center or hospital.
During consultation, individual circumstances are reviewed carefully so patients can understand their options and plan with clarity.
