Dr. Hammond’s Innovations
Advanced surgical techniques and patented solutions developed by Dr. Dennis C. Hammond
Dr. Dennis C. Hammond is internationally recognized as a leading authority in breast surgery. Over the course of his career, he has developed refined surgical techniques and specialized instruments that have helped shape modern approaches to breast augmentation, reduction, and mastopexy.
His work is widely taught and adopted by surgeons around the world. Each innovation reflects decades of clinical experience, detailed anatomical study, and a consistent commitment to improving surgical safety, tissue support, and aesthetic refinement.
The three innovations most closely associated with Dr. Hammond include:
- SAFE Breast Augmentation Technique
- SPAIR Breast Reduction Technique
- SurgiGlide™ Sutures
These advancements were developed to enhance operative precision, reduce unnecessary tissue trauma, improve scar quality, and support stable breast form as healing progresses. Together, they reflect a surgical philosophy grounded in anatomical respect, controlled technique, and carefully engineered outcomes.
SAFE Breast Augmentation Technique
A structured, anatomy-based approach to breast augmentation
The SAFE Breast Augmentation Technique was developed and refined by Dr. Hammond to provide a reproducible, safety-focused framework for implant placement.
SAFE emphasizes precise pocket creation, controlled tissue handling, and accurate implant positioning tailored to individual anatomy. This method integrates detailed surgical planning with careful respect for tissue structure and biomechanics. The technique adapts to variations in chest wall shape, tissue thickness, and implant selection.
Key objectives of the SAFE technique include improved implant stability, reduced tissue trauma, predictable implant positioning, and sustained contour support. By prioritizing meticulous dissection and controlled implant positioning, this approach helps reduce the likelihood of complications such as implant malposition, capsular contracture, visible implant edges, and gradual loss of projection.
For you as a patient
This means your breast augmentation is performed within a carefully engineered framework designed to enhance stability and balance. Implant positioning is deliberate and anatomically guided, supporting natural softness, proportional contour, and shape consistency as healing progresses. The emphasis on controlled tissue handling supports smoother recovery and reliable implant support.
For the surgeon
SAFE provides a structured and methodical system that enhances operative precision and consistency. It supports clear intraoperative decision-making, controlled implant placement, and reproducible aesthetic outcomes.
SPAIR Breast Reduction Technique
Short-scar breast reduction and mastopexy developed by Dr. Hammond
The SPAIR Technique (Short-Scar Periareolar Inferior Pedicle Reduction/Mastopexy) represents one of Dr. Hammond’s most influential contributions to modern breast surgery. It was developed to address extended scarring and shape changes that were commonly observed with traditional breast reduction techniques.
Historically, breast reduction required an anchor-shaped incision that included a long horizontal scar along the inframammary fold. While effective in reducing volume, that approach often resulted in more visible scarring and allowed the lower portion of the breast to descend as tissues adapted during healing.
Dr. Hammond designed the SPAIR technique to reduce scar length while enhancing support and projection. The technique reshapes the breast using its natural rounded contours as a guide. Tissue is removed in a controlled semi-circular pattern around the areola, and the breast is reshaped to preserve smooth transitions from the outer breast toward the inner chest wall.
The incision pattern is limited to a circular incision around the areola and a short vertical incision extending to the inframammary fold. The horizontal scar along the underside of the breast is eliminated. The inferior pedicle design maintains reliable blood supply to the nipple-areola complex and supports stable projection. The reshaping strategy supports upper pole fullness and helps the breast maintain its contour as healing progresses.
For you as a patient
SPAIR offers a reduction or lift that prioritizes both aesthetic refinement and engineered support. Scar burden is reduced, projection is preserved, and breast shape remains balanced as tissues settle. The technique supports natural contour transitions and sustained fullness in the upper portion of the breast.
For the surgeon
SPAIR provides a highly organized shaping approach that enhances control over projection, symmetry, and contour. The inferior pedicle design ensures vascular reliability, while the short-scar pattern supports refined scar placement and predictable shaping during healing.
SurgiGlide™ Sutures
A specialized suture system co-developed by Dr. Hammond
To further refine periareolar closures, Dr. Hammond co-developed SurgiGlide™ Sutures for use in the Interlocking Periareolar Suture Technique.
This system was engineered specifically for circular closures under controlled tension. The needle and suture configuration allow smooth passage through tissue and balanced tension distribution, supporting precise tissue approximation and refined scar formation. The system meets FDA and CE compliant manufacturing standards and is specifically designed for breast reduction, mastopexy, and periareolar procedures.
For you as a patient
SurgiGlide™ contributes to smoother, more uniform areolar scars and preservation of natural areolar contour. Balanced tension distribution supports refined healing and symmetry around the nipple-areola complex, resulting in a clean and harmonious appearance.
For the surgeon
SurgiGlide™ enhances precision in circular closure, allowing consistent tension control and reproducible results. The engineered design improves handling during delicate suturing and supports uniform scar formation across procedures.
Why Dr. Hammond’s innovations matter
Each of these developments reflects a consistent surgical philosophy: procedures should be precise, anatomically respectful, well-supported, and aesthetically refined.
Dr. Hammond’s work combines advanced surgical technique, specialized instrumentation, and careful evaluation of surgical results as tissues heal and mature. His methods are grounded in a deep understanding of breast anatomy, tissue mechanics, and support dynamics throughout recovery.
For you as a patient, this means your procedure is guided by techniques that have been studied, refined, and adopted internationally. The focus remains on:
- Stable breast form
- Natural contour
- Controlled scarring
- Consistent aesthetic shape
- Enhanced surgical safety
