Grafting
Restore volume and contour naturally using your own purified fat
Fat grafting, also called fat transfer or lipofilling, is a procedure that restores volume using your body’s own tissue. Small amounts of fat are gently collected from one area of the body, purified, and carefully placed in another area to enhance shape, soften contours, and restore natural fullness.
Because the treatment uses your own fat cells, the result integrates naturally with surrounding tissue and creates soft, balanced volume. Fat grafting is commonly used to restore fullness to the face, refine breast shape, enhance body contours, or improve areas affected by previous surgery.
At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), fat grafting is performed with careful technique designed to support healthy fat cell survival and natural, harmonious results.
When you may consider fat grafting
Fat grafting can be helpful when certain areas of the body or face would benefit from additional fullness or smoother contour. You may notice changes in volume as natural aging occurs, or you may want to improve shape and balance in specific areas.
Fat transfer can be used to soften hollow areas of the face, enhance breast contour, improve hip or buttock shape, and smooth irregularities that may develop after previous procedures. The treatment offers a way to add volume using your own tissue rather than synthetic fillers or implants.
Planning your procedure
Your consultation begins with a detailed evaluation of both the area receiving the fat and the areas where fat may be gently collected. Common donor sites include the abdomen, flanks, or thighs.
During this discussion, overall body proportions, tissue quality, and the amount of volume needed are carefully considered. In certain situations, fat grafting can also complement other procedures such as facial rejuvenation surgery, breast revision, or liposuction.
Each treatment plan is developed around your anatomy and the areas you would like to refine.
How Fat grafting is performed
Fat grafting involves three carefully performed steps: harvesting, purification, and placement of the fat cells.
The procedure begins with gentle liposuction to collect small amounts of fat from the selected donor area. Tiny incisions allow a small cannula to remove fat while preserving the health of the fat cells. This step also refines the contour of the donor site.
The collected fat is then purified so that only healthy fat cells remain. This preparation helps support successful integration once the fat is transferred.
The purified fat is placed into the target area using very fine injections. Small amounts are layered carefully within the tissue, allowing the transferred fat to settle evenly and create smooth, natural contours.
Fat grafting can be used for facial rejuvenation, breast contour refinement, buttock shaping, and correction of contour irregularities.
The procedure typically takes between one and three hours depending on the areas being treated.
Recovery and results
Healing progresses gradually in the weeks following treatment. Swelling improves as the transferred fat settles into its new location and integrates with surrounding tissue.
You may feel comfortable returning to light daily activities within several days. As healing continues, the treated areas develop softer, more natural fullness that blends smoothly with your existing contours.
Insurance information
At this time, insurance is not accepted for cosmetic fat grafting procedures. During your consultation, costs and payment options will be reviewed clearly so you understand what to expect before moving forward.
Surgical experience at PIPS
Fat grafting requires careful handling of delicate fat cells and thoughtful placement to create balanced, natural results.
Dr. Dennis Hammond has extensive experience using fat transfer techniques, particularly in breast surgery and complex contour refinement. His work emphasizes careful planning, precise technique, and results that integrate naturally with surrounding tissues.
Dr. Paige Goote, fellowship trained in aesthetic surgery, uses advanced fat grafting methods to support both facial rejuvenation and body contouring procedures with careful attention to proportion and balance.
