At times the skin may simply look more tired or uneven, even when you are taking good care of it.

These changes often happen gradually as collagen production slows and the skin’s natural repair process becomes less active. When that happens, treatments that support the skin’s ability to renew itself can help restore smoother texture and a healthier appearance.

SkinPen microneedling is a minimally invasive treatment that works with your skin’s own healing response. During treatment, thousands of tiny, controlled micro-channels are created in the upper layers of the skin. This gentle stimulation encourages the skin to produce new collagen and elastin, two essential components that support firmness, smoothness, and overall skin quality.

At PIPS (Partners in Plastic Surgery of West Michigan), SkinPen microneedling is performed in our Skin Care Center by licensed aestheticians and trained skincare specialists. Treatments are carefully adjusted for areas such as the face, neck, décolleté, and certain parts of the body. Depending on what your skin needs, microneedling may be performed on its own or combined with targeted serums or EXO|E exosomes to support hydration and skin renewal.

When SkinPen microneedling may be helpful

You may begin exploring microneedling if your skin feels uneven in texture or if you notice changes such as fine lines, visible pores, or marks that remain after acne has healed. Areas that appear dull or slightly less firm can also benefit from treatment.

Microneedling can help soften the appearance of superficial scars and improve overall skin texture. It may also be used on areas such as the neck, décolleté, or selected body areas where the skin no longer feels as smooth or resilient as it once did.

Because the treatment encourages the skin’s own repair process, improvements appear gradually as collagen continues to rebuild.

Planning your treatment

Each SkinPen session begins with a careful evaluation of your skin. This allows your provider to understand how your skin responds, how sensitive it may be, and which areas deserve the most attention.

During this consultation, the depth of treatment is selected based on the area being treated and the concern being addressed. Delicate facial areas require a lighter approach, while deeper settings may be appropriate for concerns such as acne scarring or certain body areas.
In some situations, microneedling may be combined with EXO|E exosomes or supportive skincare products that help hydrate the skin and support a comfortable recovery.

How the treatment is performed

Your appointment begins with gentle cleansing to remove oils, makeup, and surface impurities. The skin is then prepared with a medical-grade cleansing solution to support a safe treatment environment.

A topical numbing cream is applied to help maintain comfort throughout the procedure. Once the skin is ready, the SkinPen device uses a sterile, single-use needle cartridge to create controlled micro-channels across the treatment area.

These tiny channels stimulate the skin’s natural repair response. As healing begins, new collagen and elastin start forming beneath the surface, helping improve the structure and texture of the skin.

Immediately after microneedling, the skin is especially receptive to topical products. Your provider may apply calming or hydrating serums, antioxidant formulas, or EXO|E exosomes to support regeneration and improve the skin’s overall vitality.

The treatment concludes with soothing skincare products, moisturizer, and broad-spectrum sunscreen.

Appointments typically last about 90 minutes.

Treatment series

Microneedling is often performed as a series of sessions so the skin has time to rebuild collagen between treatments.

Appointments are typically spaced four to six weeks apart, allowing the skin to recover while continuing its natural renewal process between visits.

Recovery and healing

After treatment, the skin may appear slightly red, similar to mild sun exposure. A feeling of warmth or tightness is also common during the first day.

Over the following days, the skin may feel slightly dry as the renewal process continues. Most people feel comfortable returning to normal daily activities within 24 to 48 hours.

As the skin continues to renew itself, improvements in smoothness, tone, and overall radiance gradually become more noticeable.

Rebekah Ross has been a Registered Nurse for 15 years. Her first 3 years of nursing were spent at Mercy Health Saint Mary’s taking care of elderly, cardiovascular, and kidney transplant patients. In 2014, she made the move to work in outpatient surgery at the same hospital. The main focus of that outpatient surgery center was breast cancer and reconstructive surgery.

Rebekah worked with these patients in all areas of surgery including pre-op, operating room, and post-op. She took a break for a couple years for her family, and then started working at Partners in Plastic Surgery. You can find her in the operating room following her patients through the entire surgery process from start to finish.

She truly loves this because she can really focus on her patient and give them her full attention. Having the same nurse throughout their surgery day makes them feel more comfortable and at ease.
