* A diagnosis of breast cancer and impending mastectomies inspired this 61 year old woman to check into her options for breast reconstruction. She did her homework and came into our office to learn all she could about breast reconstruction as well as what would be the best option for her. She and her reconstructive surgeon decided to proceed with immediate breast reconstruction (at the time of her mastectomies) working with her mastectomy surgeon by using a skin sparing mastectomy pattern which leaves the skin of the breast behind. Her reconstructive surgeon filled the mastectomy defects with tissue expanders and a muscle from her back (the latissimus muscle) which gave the tissue expanders soft tissue coverage and the breast contours a smooth natural look. This 1st stage surgical treatment for her breast cancer and reconstruction was completed as an in patient. Her nipple and areola complexes were also reconstructed at this stage. During the following 4 months fluid was added to her tissue expanders 3 times. At 4 months out she was ready to proceed with the 2nd stage of her breast reconstruction as an out patient. This included removal of her tissue expanders, placement of the permanent gel breast implants and revisions of scars along with final breast shaping. Six months later her reconstructed nipple and areolas were tattooed by our cosmetic tattoo artist. Her post operative result is shown at 18 months after her 2nd stage surgical procedure and 13 months after the tattooing of her nipple and areolas. She is so happy that she checked out her possibilities for breast reconstruction and very happy with her beautiful result!!
