What are Face & Neck Lifts?
Dr. Hammond performs face and neck lifts by removing excess skin and fat. From there, they tighten the underlying facial and neck muscles. Then, they reposition the skin to provide a firmer and tighter appearance. The incisions for a face and neck lift are concealed in the hairline and natural creases of your face and neck.
Some people may benefit from a mini face lift. We have extensive experience with this procedure, have board-certified anesthesiologists on staff, and perform surgeries in our fully accredited facility. Face & Neck Lift Procedure
Dr. Van Pelt and Dr. Kath perform face and neck lifts by removing excess skin and fat. From there, they tighten the underlying facial and neck muscles. Then, they reposition the skin to provide a firmer and tighter appearance. The incisions for a face and neck lift are concealed in the hairline and natural creases of your face and neck.
Some people may benefit from a mini face lift performed by one of our surgeons. This procedure provides facial rejuvenation like a traditional facelift, with the exception that it is less invasive and requires fewer incisions. It is ideal for patients who are starting to see signs of aging.
Recovery time for a face and neck lift is about 10 to 14 days. A shorter recovery time is possible for patients choosing a mini face lift. While light activity may be resumed after about 2 weeks, it is important that strenuous exercise or activity be avoided until your surgeon approves.
Other surgical procedures you may want to consider for a complete freshening of your facial features include a brow lift or eyelid surgery. For women and men who are not quite ready for a facial plastic surgery procedure in Michigan, we have several nonsurgical options to choose from, including BOTOX® and injectable fillers.
Face & Neck Lift FAQ
If you’re considering a face or neck lift procedure, or a combination of both, you probably have a number of questions. Our plastic surgeons have extensive experience performing facelift surgery for their Michigan patients. They have provided their answers to some of the top questions patients frequently ask about these face and neck rejuvenating options.
Face and neck lift surgeries, which we often combine, are best for people who want to improve the appearance of their neck, jawline, and cheek areas by tightening loose skin and muscle. It’s important that patients are in good physical health and don’t smoke, as smoking can impede healing and hurt surgical results. Patients for this or any procedure should also be in good mental health and have a positive outlook for their surgery.
There is no “right time” for surgery, although most face and neck lift patients are older than 40. The conditions these procedures address – primarily drooping skin and wrinkles in the lower face – tend to come with age. We have seen an increase in younger patients opting for this procedure lately as a preventive measure, though. We also offer a mini face lift for patients who need less extensive correction. This procedure addresses early signs of aging and requires smaller incisions and less downtime.
Any pain or discomfort following surgery can be managed with prescription and over-the-counter medications. Most discomfort should subside after about 7 to 10 days, with some lingering symptoms for up to 2 weeks. Many patients say they feel a sensation of tightness rather than pain after surgery.
During the first week or so after surgery, you should keep your head elevated at all times, even when sleeping. Some patients feel well enough to return to work after a week, but most patients take 10 to 14 days off, over which time swelling and bruising slowly fades. You can return to light activity gradually over a couple of weeks. Walking is encouraged as soon as you feel well enough, as it can promote healing. Your surgeon will let you know when you can return to more strenuous activity.
This is one of the top concerns for most patients who get face and neck lift surgery, because many of us have seen results on others that look “windblown” or a bit too “stretched.” Rest assured – our experienced plastic surgeons take a conservative, subtle approach to facelift surgery for the patients who visit their Grand Rapids, Michigan, practice. They use the most advanced techniques to make your face look naturally more youthful and refreshed, not “worked on.”
Dr. Van Pelt, Dr. Kath, and Dr. Hammond are careful to hide your incisions in discreet locations within your hairline and along the natural creases of your face and neck so the resulting scars are essentially invisible once healed. They also use advanced techniques that mean incisions are as short and fine as possible. Our team can provide you with detailed aftercare instructions to ensure that your scars heal quickly and beautifully.
Although face lift and neck lift surgeries do not stop the natural aging process, they do turn back the clock. Many patients say their results last about 7 to 10 years before they feel they would like to have another procedure. To maintain your results, you can have non-surgical procedures such as laser treatments for skin rejuvenation or injections of BOTOX® Cosmetic and dermal fillers to lessen the appearance of wrinkles and plump up volume that may diminish over time
Those who have less advanced signs of facial aging may find that non-surgical treatments with fillers and BOTOX can suit their needs, but for extensive correction of aging in the lower face, face and neck lift surgeries are considered the gold standard. For the upper face, brow lift and eyelid surgery are excellent options. These procedures can be combined with lower face treatments for a more dramatic transformation.
