Variable Pulsed Light Therapy for Hair Removal
Advanced phototherapy systems use intense light to deliver longer lasting results with much less hassle than shaving, tweezing, and smelly depilatory creams. Our McCue Ultra Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) phototherapy system is a safe, gentle, and effective option in our Grand Rapids center for both laser hair removal and skin rejuvenation.
Instead of targeting one hair follicle at a time, VPL technology is able to treat larger areas such as the back, arms, legs, bikini area, face and neck. Depending on the size of the area, treatments may last a few minutes or much longer. Most patients achieve desired results in 2 to 3 treatments, but multiple treatments may be required for optimal results.
There are many advantages of Variable Pulsed Light (VPL) treatment over traditional laser treatment. A laser delivers only one wavelength of light and in one big “bang” of energy onto the skin. We have known for years that wavelength is important. It determines how deep the heat energy will go into the skin: the higher the wavelength, the deeper the penetration. A laser fires one single wavelength of energy that only goes to one depth. That’s why you use different lasers to do different things. The VPL uses over 400 wavelengths of light to penetrate the skin to different depths, and delivers that energy over a longer time in small changeable pulses. That means less discomfort and little to no downtime for the client. Because of the VPL micro pulsing effect, there is less overall heat rise in the skin and no need to pre-cool the skin. VPL hair removal is safer, faster, and, more importantly, more effective on more skin and hair types.
In addition to disabling regrowth of hair, VPL uses short, safe, controlled pulses of filtered light to treat spider veins, rosacea, sun damage and skin pigment changes such as age or sun spots and acne scarring.
Waxing Hair Removal
Not ready to explore laser hair removal or electrolysis? For long-lasting hair removal, try our warm wax depilatory. Waxing can be done fairly quickly and removes the entire hair follicle from the root. By using our warm wax, you can avoid frequent shavings, razor burns and cuts. Treatments are required usually every 2 to 4 weeks and most parts of the face and body can be treated—large or small.
Electrolysis Hair Removal
The medical community has long recognized electrolysis as a safe and effective way to remove unwanted hair. Many of our patients come to us through physician referral. Electrolysis is the process of treating each individual hair follicle so that the follicle is rendered completely inactive. Multiple needle galvanic electrolysis is FDA-approved for hair removal and can treat all types of hair, skin and areas of the body. It is perfect for brow shaping, as a follow-up to laser treatments for those stubborn or white hairs, or as treatment in areas too small to warrant the cost of a laser.
What to Expect
Electrolysis usually does not cause too much discomfort and is often described as a mild ache or sting. Electrolysis is accomplished by inserting a probe into the hair follicle and applying a small amount of direct electric current. The addition of this energy causes a chemical change within the follicle and the growth cells are denatured by this extreme pH balance. It is a multiple treatment process usually spread out over 7 to 10 months.
Electrolysis should only be performed by a licensed practitioner in a professional setting. Laura J. Hire is a Registered Electrologist and is board certified in the state of Michigan. Laura has over 30 years of experience, has served as president of the Michigan Electrology Association and lectures for the American Electrology Association and the Society of Clinical and Medical Electrologists.
